False Security Alarms

The Problem

  • 95-98% of all security alarm calls are false
  • Police respond to over 40 million burglar alarms annually – over 90% of which are false
  • In some areas, alarm calls account for 10-30% of all calls for police services
  • It is estimated that 7% of U.S. homes and 40% of U.S. businesses have alarm systems - a total of 7 million systems
  • The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) estimates that $600 million is spent annually in the U.S. responding to false alarms that consume 6.5 million personnel hours
  • The Justice Dept. reports that false burglar alarm police responses would free up 35,000 police officers nationwide
  • Private alarm companies sell services and then shift their costs onto the police
  • An IACP study shows that 80% of false alarms are triggered by 20% of alarm users.

Theft of Heavy Equipment

Theft of heavy equipment is an increasing problem.  In 2000, approximately 5,400 heavy equipment thefts were reported to the NCIC.

Estimates of the value of heavy equipment stolen in the U.S. annually range from $700 Million-$1 Billion

Organized crime rings are a primary driving force behind heavy equipment theft.

A significant amount of stolen construction equipment in transported out of the country and sold in underdeveloped countries.

Rubber tire equipment – backhoes and dump trucks – are the most popular because they can be driven away under their own power.

Equipment is most vulnerable on weekends at less secure construction sites.

Stolen equipment usually stays intact after theft – not sent to chop shops for dismantling and parts resale.

The recovery rate for stolen heavy equipment is only 10%-20%, compared to 65%-70% for cars and trucks – partially due to lack of law enforcement expertise and training
