Newly Constructed Home Catches Fire

South Burlington Fire Firefighter's Battle 2nd Alarm Fire in Spear Meadows Development

On Monday morning February 6th at 06:52 hrs., 911 received a call from a driver on Swift St. of a possible house fire in the Spear Meadows Development. South Burlington fire crew arrived on scene within four minutes and were faced with a heavy volume of coming from the eaves and roof of a newly constructed, one story, bungalow style home, that was nearly completed. Given the volume of fire, wind conditions and the proximity of nearby home, the Incident Commander requested a second alarm assignment. This brings Mutual Aide companies from: VTANG-FD, Burlington FD, and Williston FD to the scene to aid in extinguishment and overhaul operations. Two additional ambulances from UVM and BFD stood by as a medical support team.  Because of an early the roof collapse firefighters conducted defensive operations, operating outside of zones.  A total 22 firefighters worked for an hour to extinguisher the blaze. There was one minor injury reported to a bystander, who was evaluated at the scene, but was not transported.

St. Michael’s FD provided additional coverage for the city during the fire.

The property owned by Snyder Homes, valued at $780,000, suffered extensive damage to the roof and first floor.  South Burlington Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating origin and cause of the fire.
