City Roads in Springtime

Weight Limits, Line Striping, Street Sweeping, and Potholes

Now that temperatures are rising and the ground is thawing DPW is shifting out of winter mode and getting ready for our normal spring / summer activities. We’re currently taking equipment (street sweepers, line striping equipment, etc) out of storage and de-winterizing it. You will see our crews out sweeping and striping in the next few weeks. Our highway crew has been filling potholes with cold patch between snow storms all winter. Once the paving plants open in a few weeks we’ll switch over to hot mix, which stays in the potholes much better than the cold patch. Motorists should notice an improvement in road surface conditions.

South Burlington does not close roads or impose additional weight limit restrictions in the spring. All South Burlington roads use the State’s standard weight limit of 24,000 pounds (defined in state statute). Anything over that weight needs to obtain an overweight permit from the DPW. The permit can be obtained from the Department of Public Works.  During mud season, we may ask overweight vehicles to avoid certain roads on a case by case basis.
