New Trees Planted Throughout the City

New Trees Planted Throughout the City
This spring the City planted 44 new street trees along Nowland Farm Road and Midland Avenue. Based on a tree inventory conducted by the City Arborist, there are 512 ash trees in the City road right-of-way. Certain streets like Nowland Farm Road and Midland Avenue were planted primarily with green ash, rather than a diverse selection of tree species. In order to minimize impacts from the anticipated Emerald Ash Borer, the City has developed a plan that combines inter-planting and replacing the ash trees in order to increase the diversity of street tree species. Interplanting allows the new trees to get a head start before the existing ash trees are removed. This work was funded by the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program through the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation.
