Hinesburg Road Crosswalk Projects

Hinesburg Road Crosswalk Projects

The City recently completed a scoping study with the assistance of the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) that identified possible locations for a number of new crosswalks along Hinesburg Road, between Williston Road and Kennedy Drive.  This study noted a need for new crossings at four locations, including Ruth Street, Prouty Parkway, Wright Court, and at the Awasiwi Trail crossing.  It also identified needed improvements to the St. John Vianney crossing that would make it safer for pedestrians.

Because Hinesburg Road is a state-owned highway, City staff took the resulting study and shared the proposed crosswalks and upgrades with staff at VTrans to determine what additional information would be needed in order to implement the proposed crossings.  After receiving the state’s feedback, staff are now able to pursue additional engineering of these crossings to assist in our state permit application.  This permit is required on any work performed in a state highway in order to implement these crossings.

Staff recently met with a consultant to kick off this project, and we hope to have a permit application submitted for the implementation of at least three new crosswalks, including ones at Ruth Street, Prouty Parkway, and the Awasiwi Trail crossing.  The City’s Department of Public Works will be working to implement safety measures and maintenance tasks that were recommended by VTrans for the existing crossing at St. John Vianney Church.  This work will include upgraded and upsized signage, making sure signs are double-sided to be seen in each direction on both sides of the road, adding 2 inches of reflective strips to the sign posts, and clearing vegetation from the sidewalk so approaching cars can see waiting pedestrians as well as the crossings’ signage.  The crosswalk will also be restriped.

The implementation of all new crosswalks will be funded by the City’s Penny for Paths initiative.
