Kennedy Drive Twin Oaks Crosswalk Project

Kennedy Drive Twin Oaks Crosswalk Project

City staff officially kicked off the engineering effort associated with the implementation of a new pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Kennedy Drive and Twin Oaks Terrace.  This is a much-needed crossing that will safely allow pedestrians and bicyclists to cross a very busy roadway.  It involves the elimination of the eastbound Kennedy Drive right turn deceleration lane onto Twin Oaks, while also installing an offset Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon-protected crosswalk.

The project was identified and detailed in a scoping study that was completed in 2019.  It has also been on the City’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee’s priority project list, and the City Council has approved this project as listed on the City’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for the last three years.

As noted earlier this month, this project was awarded $75,000 from the 2021 VTrans Small-Scale Bicycle & Pedestrian Program.  The project will require the City pay 50% of the construction costs, which have already been designated in the CIP through the Penny for Paths fund.  The project is still on track to be constructed by the end of 2021.
