950 Shrubs and Trees Planted

This spring, 950 trees and shrubs were planted along Muddy Brook and one of its tributaries on Bread & Butter Farm in South Burlington. Volunteers from Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, SunCommon, and ECO AmeriCorps worked with the Vermont Land Trust, Friends of the Winooski River, and US Fish & Wildlife Services' Partners for Fish & Wildlife program to carry out the plantings. The restored areas will help slow floodwaters, reduce erosion, improve wildlife habitat, and protect water quality in Lake Champlain.

“When you get your hands in the soil and plant a tree, you’re connecting with your watershed and helping to care for it,” said Allaire Diamond, an ecologist with the land trust. “You become part of helping it function as a healthy system.”

These efforts were made possible by funding from the Partners for Fish & Wildlife program, National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, and other sources.
