Fire Damages New Home
On Friday April 1st the South Burlington Emergency Dispatch Center received multiple calls from the Highland Terrace neighborhood reporting heavy smoke in the area, related from a truck fire.
South Burlington Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found at 100 Highland Terrace, a large panel truck ablaze in front of a two-car garage with the fire was extending into the second floor of a two-story single-family home under construction. Quick action by the firefighters, stopped the spread of the fire and into the rest of the home, while other fire fighters worked to suppress the truck fire.
The main body of the fire was extinguished in less than 8 minutes. Fire crews spent the next hour extinguishing hot spots and removing smoke from the rest of the home. The exterior of the garage dormer sustained heavy fire damage while only the room above the garage sustained smoke and heat damage. The rest of the home was undamaged.
The fire started in the large panel truck owned by Bugbee Insulation. The truck and its crew were installing spray foam insulation in the void spaces of the home at the time of the fire. Investigators believe that a mechanical anomaly in the truck’s pump and pressure assemblies triggered the incident. Because of the flammable properties of the liquid foam concentrate, the fire grew rapidly in size and intensity.
The South Burlington Fire Department was assisted by, VTANG-FD, Burlington Fire, Williston Fire and UVM Rescue A total of 26 Firefighters were called to the scene. Mutual Aid Fire Departments responded to six emergency calls in the City during this incident.
No civilians were injured in the fire. One fire fighter was injured and damage to the $800,000 home is estimated at $50-75,000. The building is fully insured.
