Grandparent Scam Alert!

The SB Police Department have received multiple “grandparent” scam complaints this summer. This scam typically involves the scammers calling a victim on the phone and telling them another family member has been in an accident or has been arrested. The scammers tell the victim that a large sum of money is needed in order to bail the family member out of jail or for some other reason. The scammer will then direct the victim to go to the bank, withdraw a large amount of cash, and hand it over to a courier that will come to their house. The victim is told to not tell anybody what the money is for.
The South Burlington Police Department does not make it a practice to contact individuals about bail money for family members who have been arrested.
If a member of the public receives a call like this, please be aware that it is most likely a scam. Make note of any phone numbers used to call you and contact your local police department.
